Detalhes

Quoting statistics when starting an article about a performance artist is highly unusual but in the
case of Nando Reis it is necessary to show his true artistic range. In 2016 he was the 6th most played
live artist in the country, his songs were 13th in the list of most played on radio and number 1 (#1) in
the category of ambient sound. Given that, it is no exaggeration to say that in his 35 year career
since he first took the stage as a Titã in 1982 (from his former band The Titãs) his writing output
turned him into one of the principal Brazilian composers in history. To put that into context the next
artists in the most played songs list are Caetano Veloso, Renato Russo (Urban Legion) Lulu Santos
and Djavan.
Such statistics are not a surprise for those who work with music in Brazil or who study the subject for
other reasons. The vast majority of people associate Nando’s songs with his unique voice as either a
Titã or an Infernal (his current band is Nando Reis e os Infernais).
‘Diariamente’ sung by Marisa Monte, ‘All Star’, ‘O Segundo Sol’ and ‘Relicario’ recorded by Cassia Eller, ‘Resposta and ‘É Uma Partida de Futebol’ recorded by Skank, ‘Do Seu Lado’ by Jota Quest, ‘Onde Voce Mora?’ and ‘Querem meu Sangue’ by Cidade Negra. All of them were major hits in Brazil and were written by Nando Reis, alone or in partnership with the artists.
His composing began before his music. Nando has always been a voracious reader. He loved letter
writing and writing books (even if they were not published) and poetry. He began to try to play
guitar chords to his poems, after being introduced to the Rolling Stones by his older brother and to
the guitar by his sister. At the age of 15 he set up the band Os Camarões and played a song of his
own, ’Pomar’, in a school festival.
In 1985, for the second record of The Titãs, called ‘Televisão’ he contributed ‘Pra Dizer Adeus’ and
‘O Homem Cinza’. In the first album he included his own versions of ‘Marvin’ and ‘Se Querem Meu Sangue’.
For the classic albums ‘Cabeça Dinossauro’ and ‘Jesus Não Tem Dentes no País dos Banguelas’ Nando wrote ‘Homem Primata’, ‘Igreja’, ‘Bichas Escrotos’, ‘Diversao’ and ‘Nome aos Bois’, in addition to the title track of the second album.
He felt the loss of two great partners deeply, Titãs’ guitarist Marcelo Frommer and Cassia Eller, and he left the band after the release of the 2001 album ‘A Melhor Banda de Todos os Tempos da Última Semana’.
In his first solo work, ’12 de Janeiro’ (1994) he produced the hit ‘Me Diga’. In the following years he
released ‘Para Quando o Arco-Iris Encontrar o Pote de Ouro’ (2000), ‘Infernal’ (2001), and ‘A Letra A’
(2003), and achieved double gold and platinum with ‘MTV Ao Vivo’ in 2004.
He still has on his resume ‘Sim e Nao’ (2006), ‘Luau MTV’ (2007), ‘Perfil’ (2008), ‘Drês’ (2009), ‘MTV
Ao Vivo (Bailão do Ruivão)’ (2010), ‘Sei’ (2012), ‘Sei Como Foi em BH’ (2013), ‘Voz e Violão – No
Recreio -Volume 1’ (2015) and ‘Jardim-Pomar’ (2016).
The album recorded live in BH (Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais state) was nominated for the
Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Rock Album. And the most recent work ‘Jardim-Pomar’ enjoys the
participation of his former colleagues in Titãs – Branco Mello, Sergio Britto, Paulo Miklos and
Arnaldo Antunes, as well as the singers Pitty, Luiza Possi, and Tulipa Ruiz, with contributions by
musicians Peter Buck (REM) and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) together with four of his five children
(Zoé, Sophia, Theo, and Sebastião, the latter who formed the duo 2Reis with him). The album has
received two Grammy nominations in the categories of Best Song in Portuguese (with ‘Só Posso
Dizer’) and Best Rock Album or Alternative Music in Portuguese.
He has three Grammy Awards, one achieved in 2002 with ‘Acústico Cassia Eller’ as Best Portuguese-
speaking Rock Album, another in 2011, for ‘De Repente’ with Skank for Best Rock Music in
Portuguese and ‘Jardim-Pomar’ got the Best Portuguese Language Rock or Alternative Album in 2017.
